Dermal Fillers: Restylane, Perlane, Radiesse, Collagen, Juvederm Artefill - back to services
Dermal fillers are substances that are injected under the skin to smooth skin and augment lips and other facial features. They are derived from natural sources and have undergone strict clinical testing for safety and efficacy both in the United States and throughout the world. Often used to complement an eyelid surgery, neck lift, or other procedure, dermal fillers provide excellent results that typically last three to six months. Treatments are quick; results are immediate; and there is no downtime. For information about Radiesse®, Restylane®, Sculptra®, or Juvéderm™, Dr. Kurtis Waters will evaluate your skin and recommend the best treatment for your individual needs.
Restylane® is a revolutionary, non-allergenic dermal filler from Sweden that offers exceptional, long-lasting results. With Restylane® we can smooth facial lines and wrinkles, add body and contour to lips, and sculpt the cheeks and mouth. This highly effective cosmetic filler is made of hyaluronic acid, a biodegradable substance that occurs naturally in all living beings. Its natural function in the human body is to provide volume and pliability to the skin. Hyaluronic acid is capable of binding with water up to 1,000 times its weight in water, so even as a Restylane® treatment begins to naturally degrade, it continues to attract water. This is why Restylane® lasts up to 60 percent longer than collagen fillers. Clinical trials have shown that lip augmentation treatments with Restylane® last up to six months, and facial contouring treatments last up to 12 months. Because it is so effective, we often uses Restylane® to enhance the results of a neck lift or eyelid surgery. Our patients appreciate the fact that because Restylane® is derived from a natural substance, no skin test is necessary prior to treatment.
JUVÉDERM™ Injectable Gel
JUVÉDERM™ Injectable Gel is an advanced, next-generation dermal filler made from a highly refined form of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the human body that provides the skin with nutrients, hydration, and volume. The makers of JUVÉDERM™ Injectable Gel have created a dermal filler that contains the highest concentration of cross-linked hyaluronic acid of all dermal fillers currently available. This means that JUVÉDERM™ Injectable Gel has a smoother, more malleable consistency than other dermal fillers and provides truly outstanding results.
Approved by the FDA in 2006, JUVÉDERM™ Injectable Gel is a highly biocompatible gel derived entirely from non-animal sources — a skin test is unnecessary prior to treatment. We can use JUVÉDERM™ Injectable Gel to smooth fine to moderate wrinkles and diminish deep lines and folds for a rejuvenated facial appearance. With JUVÉDERM™ Injectable Gel treatments, our expert physician can shape facial contours to provide balance and symmetry, and to eliminate the drawn look that sometimes develops with age. We can also use this versatile dermal filler to add volume to lips to create the full, sensual look that causes hearts to quicken.
The superb results provided by JUVÉDERM™ Injectable Gel treatments typically last six months or longer. Many of our patients choose to complement another procedure, such as eyelid surgery or a neck lift, with a JUVÉDERM™ Injectable Gel treatment for more comprehensive aesthetic enhancement. Sculptra® is one of the newest injectable filler agents, and Dr. Waters’ patients have reported a high degree of satisfaction with the results. This injectable was initially used primarily to treat individuals with HIV who suffer from a disease called lipoatrophy, which causes facial fat to disappear. Sculptra® restores facial volume by increasing the production of the body’s own collagen. The extra collagen increases skin thickness and helps fill out sunken cheeks, indentations, and hollows beneath the eyes. Strategic use of Sculptra® can dramatically increase volume which can lift target areas and restore more youthful contours. Although it may take four to six weeks before changes become fully noticeable, the effects of Sculptra® injections typically last two to three years. Sculptra® is sometimes referred to as the “liquid facelift” because it produces such dramatic results. To learn more about Sculptra®, contact Dr. Waters’ office today.
Whether you are longing to reverse the common signs of aging or address a health issue that otherwise would require an invasive treatment, you have more options in looking and feeling better with Radiesse™. Developed with safety and longevity in mind, Radiesse is a new generation injectable filler that offers superior versatility for both cosmetic and reconstructive use without surgery. What sets Radiesse apart from other dermal fillers? The answer is in its durability, longevity, and versatility. The unique composition of Radiesse provides immediate visual improvement common with other fillers, along with the benefit of long-lasting results. This is because Radiesse is made of very tiny, smooth calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres. The microspheres (particles) form a scaffold through which your body’s own collagen grows, and this produces the desired long-term effect. These unique advantages make Radiesse the ideal choice for facial shaping and contouring.
ArteFill, produced by Artes Medical, is an improved version of Artecoll, which has been used in Europe and Canada on more than 400,000 patients during the past 10 years. ArteFill was FDA approved in October 2006 for the treatment of nasolabial folds (smile lines) and has also been used off-label for lip augmentation, acne scars, and other wrinkles.
ArteFill is a gel filler consisting of millions of synthetic microspheres (polymethylmethacrylate or PMMA) suspended in purified bovine (cow) collagen. ArteFill also contains the local anesthetic lidocaine to reduce discomfort during injection.
How ArteFill Works
ArteFill is injected directly beneath the wrinkle to add a permanent support structure and smoothen the area. The synthetic PMMA microspheres in ArteFill are "non-resorbable," which means they are not absorbed into the body or metabolized, allowing ArteFill to last significantly longer than other injectable fillers. The microspheres stimulate the body to generate its own natural collagen to encapsulate each individual microsphere, resulting in 80% of the patient's collagen and 20% microspheres (by volume) to permanently fill in the wrinkle.
All temporary fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm, Collagen, and Radiesse are eventually absorbed by the body and repeat injections are required to maintain results. ArteFill is different, as a component of ArteFill (known as ArteFill microspheres), are not absorbed by the body. These microspheres provide the permanent support needed for long-lasting wrinkle correction. The data show a statistically significant improvement of wrinkle correction between six months and five years after the initial injection, which is attributed to the ongoing collagen remodeling process around the PMMA microspheres.
If you are considering ArteFill injections we encourage you to contact us to schedule a consultation and/or treatment at Dr. Waters' office. During this visit, our experienced team of providers will listen to your concerns and discuss your options. After careful analysis of your face, we will tell you whether you are a suitable candidate for this procedure and inform you of the alternatives and potential risks of the procedure. If you are thinking about having an ArteFill injection but have never had any temporary fillers before, you may want to try Restylane, Juvederm, or Radiesse first to make sure that you like the results.
